Immigrants, minority groups skeptical about Republican outreach

BALTIMORE (Reuters) - Latinos, African-Americans and other minorities who helped President Barack Obama win a second term are skeptical about enhanced Republican outreach to their communities, but also say the future of the coalition that shaped the 2012 election may be fragile.

Top Republicans rushed to do damage control last week after Mitt Romney blamed his election loss on what he called an Obama strategy of giving "gifts" to blacks, Latinos and young voters - groups instrumental to the president's re-election victory.

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, and other Republicans warned that the party could not broaden its appeal unless it stopped insulting the very voters its was trying to reach.

"We have to really question their motives and how they're tokenizing these faces of color," Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas, executive director of the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, told activists and organizers at a conference on racial issues in Baltimore this weekend.

She said Latino voters and other minority groups remained on guard given the Republicans' reluctance to embrace immigration reform and other substantive issues. She said it had not escaped notice that most delegates at Republican convention were white despite the inclusion of Latino speakers.

Michael Omi, a leading scholar on U.S. racial politics at the University of California, Berkeley, said the Republican party faced a crisis in how to adapt to changing demographics, which show blacks, Latinos, Asians and others will eclipse whites as a majority of the U.S. population in three decades, without moving away from its core constituency of white males.

"All of that amounts to a pretty thin veneer," Omi told over 1,400 teachers, doctors, artists and others at the "Facing Race" conference hosted by the non-profit Applied Research Center.

He said it was still unclear if Asian-Americans and Latinos would be increasingly accepted as "honorary whites," which could align them more closely with the Republican party while perpetuating a black-white divide, or if the country would move toward a new, more multi-faceted view of race.

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Diaz, who immigrated from the Dominican Republic when he was a child and now teaches at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said the 2012 presidential election clearly reflected growing unease with what he called the Republican party's "angry white male machine."

"People of color have for the first time in the history of the United States attained a strategic plurality that, when coordinated, allowed us to decisively alter the outcome of the presidential campaign in Obama's favor," said Diaz, author of the best-selling novel, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao."

IMAGES OF WHITE SUPREMACY

But maintaining the new alliances could be tough, given long-standing tensions among various groups, deeply internalized images of white supremacy among minorities and vast economic disparities still in place 50 years after the civil rights movement, Diaz said. "Who knows if the coalition will hold, splinter, collapse or mutate," he added.

Rinku Sen, executive director of the center that hosted the conference, said she saw growing interest in racial justice issues, including hundreds of grass-roots initiatives focused on immigrant rights, underperforming schools, healthcare, working conditions, human trafficking and mass incarceration.

Over the past four years, she said, many of those groups began working more closely together, partnering across racial, ethnic and gender lines to support each other.

In Minnesota, for instance, organizers brought together Native Americans, Somali immigrants and others to oppose a voter-identification amendment. In Maryland, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) rallied its members to support an amendment legalizing same-sex marriage.

Sen said there was also far more attention to racial issues during the 2012 election, but the Republican party faced an uphill battle with non-white voters after remarks like those made by Romney, especially since the Republican policy agenda did not address the needs of large numbers of people of color.

Republicans in recent years have taken a hard line against the estimated 11.2 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States, most of whom are Hispanic. During the campaign, Romney called for "self-deportation" of such immigrants.

"Unless they figure out how to adapt their policy platforms to address those needs, I think they're going to continue to have trouble," Sen told Reuters during the conference.

At the same time, Sen said a record number of deportations and other issues had left many immigrants and others ambivalent about the Democratic Party as well.

Diaz told reporters the Republican political machine remained strong and well-funded and could still fragment the fledgling coalition whose success in 2012 had surprised many of its own members.

"Just because people have the numbers does not mean they're not going to be captured," he said. "Historically there's been very efficient ways to neutralize numerical advantages."

Best Android Games: Top 10 Game Apps For The Nexus 7, Nexus 10

nexus 7
The 10 best Android games for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets. (Photo: flickr.com / robertnelson)

The Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are two of the most popular tablets of the holiday season, and it's for a good reason. We concluded long ago that the Nexus 7 is the best tablet on the market when it comes to value, and similarly, we believe that the Nexus 10 offers a great value. Both offer excellent processing power, a high-resolution display and a humongous app market.

As great as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 are in terms of hardware, the devices can't truly live up to their potential without the proper software. Although there are literally hundred of thousands of apps on the Google Play market, most tablet owners are interested in the best games available. With that in mind, we decided to create a list of the best games for Android.

Like Us on Facebook

Here are the best games for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10:

1) Dead Trigger (Free):?This game was pirated at such a high rate that the game's developer inevitably revoked the price. It's now free in the Google Play store, and it's instantly become a hallmark of mobile gaming. This classic zombie shooter has beautiful graphics and intuitive controls. If you want a blood-stained, high-intensity shooter, Dead Trigger is must-have.

2) ShadowGun ($4.99):?This third-person shooter was called one of the best-looking mobile games ever created by IGN, and we can't argue with that. This fast-paced shooter was optimized for the Tegra 3 processor, which means it looks especially gorgeous on the Nexus 7. If you're searching for a console gaming experience on the Nexus 7, you'll probably want to purchase this game.

3) Triple Town (FREE):?This puzzle game is beautifully designed and has incredibly unique and addictive gameplay. The purpose of this game is to build the largest city possible, and you do that by plotting out items. By connecting more than three of kind of any item, you'll slowly grow your town. Triple Town is completely original, and it's adorable villains and strategic-style gameplay will easily lure you in for hours.

4) Death Dome (FREE):?There aren't many fighting games available on Android, but Death Dome more than makes up for the lack of the genre. Build your character up with awesome weapons, shields and armor by killing enemies. Fight head-to-head against dozens of mutants and freaks using weapons never seen before in any game (such as jaguar latching onto a bee hive at the end of a stick). Death Dome gets straight to the point. If you're a fan of bloodshed, you'll want to have this game.

5) 100 Floors (FREE):?This is one of the most simple and also one of the most innovative mobile games on the market. Players try to reach to top floor of a 100 story building by solving riddles to open each elevator door. The riddles presented to players are of an incredible vareity and include mathematical, auditory and mechanical puzzles. If you've ever been a fan of puzzle solving, this is a game you must play.

6) Strikefleet Omega (FREE):?This strategy game asks users to command a fleet of armored ships to kill waves of incoming enemies. The campaign is well-developed and very easy to follow. The graphics look fantastic and all of the menus are extremely easy to navigate. Build your fleet by killing enemies over time. If you've ever been a fan of wave-based defensive strategy games, this is one that you must download. We think it's the best strategy game on Android, period.

7) Monster Pet Shop (FREE):?This is one of the best kid's games for Android, but it's just as fun to play if you're an adult. Monster Pet Shop is essentially a virtual pet game that allows users to breed and sell monsters as pets. The game requires users to breed unique (and adorable) monsters and sell them to store visitors. This game is simple, fun and great for tablets shared by family members.

8) Grabatron (FREE):?This game requires users to control a UFO in order to wreak havoc on an entire town. The UFO is equipped with a very powerful retractable claw that allows users to abduct innocent civilians and also pick up items that can later be thrown or smashed into tall buildings. The basic premise of Grabatron is to destroy everything, so if you're a fan of destruction and demolition, there's a great chance that you'll love this game.

9) Global Outbreak (FREE):?This game mixes elements of real-time strategies with elements of turn-based strategies. The premise of the game is built around a zombie outbreak. As one of the last humans alive, you're responsible for strategically battling outbreaks across the world. We think the graphics could be a little sharper, but aside from that, we had very few gripes with this game. Get it if you're a fan of real-time strategies or old RPGs.

10) Bad Piggies (FREE):?We hate to choose something so obvious, but we have to give credit where credit is due. Bad Piggies is extremely addictive, has great graphics and excellent physics considering the number of variables involved in the gameplay. Players are required to build contraptions out of a slew of parts in order to get a pig past a certain checkpoint. The options for building a contraption are almost limitless. If you like building things, you'll like Bad Piggies.

John Piper - Sermon Audio - SERMON: Installation of Rev. Voytek at Rehoboth Reformed Church

From the ever-imaginative mind of William Paul Young comes Cross Roads, a novel that surely will be compared with his first work of fiction, the self-published phenomenon The Shack. Though the story is different, the new work has some of the same themes as his first, including the struggle to understand the character of God and nontraditional manifestations of the three...

TV review: Unreported World ? Dominican Baseball Dreams

Quiz question: which city produces more Major League Baseball players per capita than any other? New York? Philadelphia? Boston? Detroit? Nope, it's San Pedro de Macor?s in the Dominican Republic. In the US, a boy can't sign for a club until he's got a high-school diploma, normally when he's 18 or 19 years old. But America's scouts like them much younger than that, so they go to the Caribbean instead, where kids can drop out of school at 14.

Unreported World: Dominican Baseball Dreams (Channel 4) is a departure for this foreign-affairs strand, which normally reports from areas of conflict and danger. No blue flak jacket required this time ? but the story is powerful and shocking.

The trouble is, for every Julio Lugo (no, me neither) who makes it to the big time, there are 1,000 kids who don't, and who then have nothing to fall back on because they left school at 14. Like Jose Miguel, who was once a major-league prospect and offered contracts, but his greedy trainer held out for more, and Jose ended up with nothing.

Exactly the same now appears to be happening to Miguel's nephew, Patterson Segura, the main character in reporter Seyi Rhodes's film. Patterson, a talented and likable 16-year-old who can pitch a ball at 90mph, has a couple of offers at around the $40,000-50,000 mark. Which is fine by Patterson and his granny who raised him, but his trainer Jovanny says no, he wants more.

Rhodes asks Jovanny what happens to the ones who get left by the wayside. "Drugs ? because of the frustration," Jovanny says. "Alcohol, depression and madness." So take the 50 bloody grand, for God's sake, for Patterson's sake, I'm shouting at the telly. You're half the?problem.

On my preview copy, there's no postscript, no news of what happened to Patterson. Hopefully there is on the final version. And hopefully it's good news for Patterson ? not three strikes and he's out.

Gold And Silver Stocks: A Dramatic Change In Fundamentals Or A ...

The stock exchange is a very volatile, emotion-driven place. Even though most of the time one can predict future moves in particular assets with decent effectiveness, every once in a while abrupt and unexpected market moves take place. And we have just seen such violent and heavy declines in precious metals mining stocks.
?
Sadly, no one is able to foresee the future with 100% certainty and this is why diversification is such a crucial concept in investing. It would have certainly protected gold and silver investors' profits or at least diminished their losses had they invested not only in mining stocks but also in metals themselves.
?
Now, the following question arises: Is this a sign of some important change in the mining stocks sector or just a short-term anomaly? Let?s take a look at the charts to find out ? we?ll start with the miners to gold ratio (charts courtesy of http://stockcharts.com).
?

?
On the above chart, we see that the ratio plunged this week. This is seen every few months and is almost always followed by an immediate reversal and a rally in prices. This can be seen in August 2011, October 2011, and January 2012. Very sharp declines are followed by strong rallies, and this is also seen in early July 2012. This was actually the final buying opportunity before a strong rally emerged in gold prices. At that time, the RSI was extremely oversold, and this is the case today as well. Although it may be difficult to believe, the situation is still bullish in this chart.
?
Now, let us move on to junior mining stocks.
?

?
In the Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Index (which is a proxy for the junior miners as so many of them are included in it), we see a move below the horizontal support line. This move was sharp, sudden and has not been confirmed. We expect to see an invalidation of the move in the coming week. Since this breakdown was not confirmed, the situation has become only slightly more bearish this week. Not much weight is placed on this signal given the situation in the rest of the precious metals sector.

Manitou Messenger : 'Imaginary Invalid' stuns audience with wit

Amy Mihelich, Contributing Writer
November 15, 2012 ? 59 views

Brilliant would be an understatement for St. Olaf?s production of ?Imaginary Invalid.? From the stunning set to the colorful costumes to the admirable acting, the cast and crew should be proud of the exquisite performance.

?Imaginary Invalid? tells the story of Argan, an elderly and wealthy hypochondriac, and his struggle to be taken seriously by his family and servants. He arranges the marriage of his daughter, Ang?lique, with a young doctor to ensure he will always receive proper ? and free ? medical attention. However, she has fallen in love with someone else and refuses to consent to his orders. While this is happening, Argan?s manipulative young wife attempts to have a will written that will give her all of his money. It is through the cunning strategy of his servant, Toinette, that Argan is able to see through the scheme of his wife and accept the wishes of his daughter, while realizing he may be the only one who can ?cure? himself.

Moliere?s script itself combines farce and satire to concoct a clever display of charm, wit and humor. Truly bringing the story to life, the actors (under the direction of Gary Gisselman and Mariana Araoz) boldly tackle the edgy humor and blatant innuendos, while managing to connect with the audience on a deeper level.

One of the ways this was accomplished was through the dialogue. During conversations, the actors used a ?ping-pong? approach; if two actors were having a conversation, the one who was talking would look directly at the audience while the other looked at them, and then when the other character spoke, they both turned their heads so the new speaker was facing the audience. This direct discourse between the other characters as well as the viewers created an instant connection between the actors and the audience.

Adding an interactive element to the show, the actors candidly addressed the audience throughout the play, introducing the cellist, throwing in a shameless plug for the sister performance, ?Marry Me a Little,? and at one point even walking through the rows of auditorium seats.

John Michael Verrall ?14 was simply stunning as Argan. His well-developed interpretation of his character and obvious experience shone through. Everything from his slightly-wobbly voice to his movement to his climactic fits of rage was the perfect balance between being fully immersed and being over-the-top. Repeatedly establishing that he is an invalid created a sense of apathetic likability, invoking pity while reminding the audience just how ridiculous he was being at the same time.

The chemistry between Argan?s personal servant Toinette ? played by Sari Abelson ?13 ? and Verrall was astounding. Her sarcasm and wisdom combined with his egotism resulted in a well-choreographed, almost rhythmic banter.

Andrew Lindvall ?14 as Cl?ante was one of the most outrageous and delightful performers. His complex but hilarious persona accomplished the daunting task of coming off as rather self-obsessed, and yet still completely infatuated with Ang?lique.

The purposeful interactions of all the actors with one another added a professionally polished shimmer to the play. The entire company is on stage at all times, spectating on the outskirts of the set when they are not participating in the main action. Each individual seemed to have an opinion on everything that occurred and openly displayed it with appropriate expressions and reactions. The cast?s focused engagement throughout the show was impressive, as all members stayed visibly in character for the entire two hour performance.

The play seemed set in an earlier time period. Taking advantage of an opportunity to work with a traditional French theater company custom, some of the stock characters wore masks during the entire play. The exquisite costumes of most of the characters were in the conventional fashion of Moliere?s time. The brightly-lit stage and looming medicine shelves of the magnificent set appeared to be from that time as well. However, many modern elements were incorporated. Thomas Diafoirerhoea, the young doctor who has been promised to marry Ang?lique, was dressed in scrubs with a black robe over them. Another example is when Toinette used a Swiffer mop to clean the floors. These modern props and costumes seemed a little out of place against the backdrop of the more traditional scenery, but effectively contributed to a timeless nuance that drew the audience in even more deeply.

If you haven?t had the privilege of seeing the show, reserve your tickets now. Be prepared to be drawn into the story, and to laugh a lot.? It will be playing through Saturday, Nov. 17. You won?t want to miss this marvelously witty, enthralling, can?t-stop-smiling experience.

Dos And Don'ts For Breast Augmentation

Undergoing any type of operation is frightening for everyone. If you are having a breast augmentation procedure, you need to do the right things to prepare for it. It also helps to have an idea of what to expect when you are about to have a cosmetic surgery procedure.

What are the dos and the don'ts for breast augmentation surgery?

Do make arrangements to have someone give you a ride to the hospital and then be there to pick you up afterwards. You will not be permitted to drive yourself home. If you live alone, make arrangements to have someone who is able to stay with you for the first 24 to 72 hours following the surgical procedure.

Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications or aspirin within a few days of your breast augmentation. The surgeon will give you a list of instructions and guidelines to follow in preparing for your operation.

If you are a smoker, give up your nicotine habit two weeks prior to your implant surgery. You cannot resume smoking for two weeks following the procedure. Smoking increases the risk that complications will arise. It also slows the rate at which your body heals.

This is something that not all breast augmentation patients will think about but it is a useful tip. Every implant has a manufacturer's device sticker. It would be wise to obtain a copy of this sticker in the event that a problem crops up following your procedure. The device sticker identifies the implant brand you will get, as well as the manufacturer's lot number and the size. All of this information should be found on your medical record at the plastic surgeon's office. Ask the operating physician about it.

You should also ask to be given a copy of the manufacturer's package insert for the implants that will be placed inside your body. The package will contain information about precautions that need to be taken and risks that are connected to the implant that you receive. This information needs to be kept in a safe place for future reference.

Do not eat any food that contains the substance salicylate before your breast augmentation. This includes such foods as apricots, blackberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, wine, cherries, raspberries, garlic, prunes, pickles and raspberries.

Just as you have to be careful of the foods you eat pre-op, you also must be wary of the herbal products you consume as well. Do not consume any of these products before your operation:

- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Echinacea
- Ginkgo Biloba
- St. John's Wort
- Willow Bark

Do dress in loose garments on the day of the surgery that can be easily removed. For instance, a blouse or shirt with buttons in the front is your best bet.

It is essential that you do not have anything to eat or drink for eight hours before the cosmetic operation. This includes water.

Anyone seeking a breast augmentation in Philadelphia should seek out an area provider sure to provide quality results with a professional approach. Locals can find just such a service with a visit to http://www.drbucky.com.

No. 10 Florida Handles No. 22 Wisconsin

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Erik Murphy tied a career-high with 24 points just days after dealing with an illness, and No. 10 Florida beat 22nd-ranked Wisconsin 74-56 on Wednesday night.

Murphy made all 10 of his shots, including two from 3-point range, as the short-handed Gators enjoyed a double-digit lead most of the night. He also had seven rebounds.

Mike Rosario added 15 points, four rebounds and four assists for Florida (2-0), and Kenny Boynton chipped in 10.

Sam Dekker and Jared Berggren had 11 points apiece for Wisconsin (1-1).

The Gators, playing without point guard Scottie Wilbekin (suspension) and forward Casey Prather (concussion), essentially won the game with fast starts in both halves. Florida scored the first nine points of the game and the first seven after intermission.

Murphy was involved in both runs. He made a baseline hook that seemed to get him started early. He added a jumper, a putback and a 3-pointer that pushed the lead to 16-6.

The Badgers (1-1), meanwhile, came out flat, missing their first six shots ? including five from behind the arc.

That hole proved too big to overcome against the hot-shooting Gators.

Florida hit 18 of 24 shots (75 percent) in the first 20 minutes and extended the lead to 19 (50-31) early in the second half. Boynton converted the 13th four-point play of his career to open the second half. Murphy followed with a post basket, and then Boyton added a driving layup.

The Badgers never cut the lead below 12 the rest of the way.

Murphy had been questionable to play. He missed practice earlier this week with an illness that caused bad headaches, nausea and vomiting. Not only did he play, he also started.

And didn't miss!

He became the fourth player in school history and 18th in Southeastern Conference history to take at least 10 shots in a game and make them all.

The Gators probably needed his effort after coach Billy Donovan was forced to practice with four upperclassmen and four freshmen earlier in the week. It's unknown when Wilbekin will be reinstated, and Prather could miss at least another week after sustaining two concussions in practice during a nine-day span.

The only negative for Florida was 20 turnovers. Playing without Wilbekin, Rosario and Boynton shared ball-handling duties, and the Gators turned it over 12 times in before the break.

But they had enough offense to make the turnovers negligible.

Freshman Michael Frazier II had eight points and five rebounds for Florida. Fellow forward Will Yeguete finished with nine points and eight boards.

It was the first of several challenges before SEC play. The Gators also play UCF, Marquette, Florida State, Arizona and Kansas State before league play ?the toughest non-conference slate in Donovan's 17 seasons in Gainesville.

PFT: Big Ben worried more about rib than shoulder

Detroit Lions v Minnesota VikingsGetty Images

Christian Ponder could do no wrong as the Vikings got off to a 4-1 start. But even though he proceeded to look exceedingly human, the Vikings still think he?s the right guy.

General manager Rick Spielman just finished a talk with Vikings beat writers, and made it clear where the organization stood on their second-year quarterback.

?I know everybody in this organization believes Christian Ponder is our guy,? Spielman said, via Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com. ?And I have full, 100 percent belief that Christian Ponder?s going to be our quarterback heading into the future.?

Beating the Lions last week to go into a bye week 6-4 has quieted some of the criticism, but there?s been reasonable doubt about Ponder after a tough stretch of games that made the Vikings look like they could only do one thing well ? run.

?Those are things that you look at when you?re developing a young quarterback, is OK, he had a hiccup for a couple weeks ? how does he respond?? Spielman said. ?Well, he came out of that and responded pretty well last week. I think he ended up with a 114 quarterback rating and was very productive and probably would have been more productive, but we had a few dropped balls here and there, too.

?So, those are the signs that you?re looking at, not only from his physical ability, but how he handles the pressure at that position from the mental standpoint, too.?

Speilman said he?s been encouraged by Ponder?s approach, even the way he joked about his sideline-reporter girlfriend, which became a topic during his slump.

?You have to have stuff roll off your back at that position, just like a head coach or general manager,? Spielman said. ?You know there?s going to be ? the praises come with that position, but the heavy criticisms come with that position, too. But you have to have the mental makeup to be able to handle all of that.?

Either way, Spielman said he was still well short of the time he needed to make a final determination on Ponder.

?I always have followed the three-year rule,? Spielman said. ?The quarterback position ? you?ve got to remember, our guy?s only in his second year. You look at the history of development of quarterbacks and I?ve talked to you guys a lot about that and where they come.

?I know they?re getting measured regardless if they?re a rookie or second-year [player]. They?re going to get evaluated from the outside and from the media on their performance that week. But you have to be, from an internal standpoint, looking at the whole picture and looking at a length of time.?

That?s good news for Ponder, especially if they use the time between his second and third year to add some weapons to the outside, which will allow him to look like more than a guy who hands off to Adrian Peterson.

(AP) ? Syrian rebels control almost all the villages near the frontier with the Israel-held Golan Heights, the Israeli defense minister said Wednesday, bringing the conflict dangerously close to the Jewish state and raising the possibility of an armed clash with the region's strongest power.

During a tour of the Golan Heights, Defense Minister Ehud Barak gave a scathing assessment of Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces and said Israel will remain "vigilant and alert."

"Almost all of the villages, from the foot of this ridge to the very top, are already in the hands of the Syrian rebels," said Barak, who was accompanied by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The Syrian army is displaying ever-diminishing efficiency."

The civil war in Syria has renewed tensions over the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel captured from Syria in 1967. Despite hostility between the two countries, Syria has been careful to keep the border quiet since the 1973 Mideast war.

But in recent days, Israeli troops have fired into Syria twice after apparently stray mortar shells flew into Israel-held territory. On Wednesday, an Associated Press journalist said an Israeli helicopter was patrolling the border area, and gunfire could be heard. The source of the gunfire was not immediately clear.

While it is widely believed that Assad does not want to pick a fight with Israel, there are fears the embattled Syrian leader may try to draw Israel into the fighting in a bout of desperation. Israeli officials believe it is only a matter of time before Syrian rebels topple the longtime leader.

Israeli political scientist Dore Gold, an informal adviser to Netanyahu, said it's difficult to assess whether Israel is better off with rebels in control along the border.

"The forces fighting the Assad government are made up of diverse elements. And to make a judgment whether Israel should be more or less worried, that would require having a very precise picture of what's going on there, which we don't," he said. "But it's no secret that among the Syrian rebels are forces that identify with al-Qaida, and are a cause of concern."

A buffer zone lines the Israeli border with Syria. Beyond the border on the Syrian side is a 75-kilometer (46-mile) stretch where no military forces other than U.N. forces are permitted.

Israeli military officials said Barak's assessment depicted a situation that is not entirely new, and that rebels have held those villages for several weeks. It was not clear how many villages the rebels hold along the Golan Heights, which is about 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not allowed to discuss the sensitive information, said the situation is dynamic and could change easily, with the villages returning to Assad's hands.

Israeli experts said nothing prevents Assad's forces from entering the villages and retaking them, even ones in the U.N. zone.

"Just like any other place, it is a battleground between the army and the rebels," said Itamar Rabinovich, the former chief Israeli negotiator with Syria.

He said Israel would likely continue to remain on the sidelines of the fighting because Israeli officials believe Assad will eventually fall and that any support for rebels would backfire.

But privately, "Israel is rooting for the right kind of insurgents," he said, ones who follow a moderate line and have no links to Islamist extremist groups.

Moshe Maoz, professor emeritus at Jerusalem's Hebrew University, said the exchange of fire this week was "based on a mistake," and that if such incidents continued, they would be infrequent.

"The Syrian army doesn't have any interest in provoking Israel," he said. "Syria has enough problems."

The violence in Syria, which has killed more than 36,000 people since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011, threatens to inflame an already combustible region. The fighting already has already spilled into Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey.

On Wednesday, Syrian troops used aircraft and artillery to try to dislodge rebels from a town next to the border with Turkey, as Ankara warned it would retaliate against any airspace violations.

An AP journalist in the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar saw Syrian airstrikes in the adjacent Syrian town of Ras al-Ayn, where rebels say they have ousted troops loyal to Assad.

Deadly airstrikes began several days ago, and many casualties were taken to Turkey for treatment. Local officials said as many as 30 people have died since Monday. The journalist also saw Syrian forces shelling a wooded area near Ras al-Ayn from where rebels had been firing.

Hundreds of thousands of people have fled the fighting in Syria into neighboring Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Another 11,000 escaped to Turkey last week following the surge of fighting at Ras al-Ayn, which is located in the northeastern Syrian province of al-Hasaka, an oil-producing region where the population is mostly Kurdish.

The proximity of the fighting to Turkey has raised fears of an escalation.

Turkish media, including the Anadolu news agency, said several villages west of Ceylanpinar have been evacuated to protect residents from any spillover of the fighting in Syria. About 1,000 people left Mursitpinar, 110 miles (180 kilometers) from Ceylanpinar, after an appeal from the loudspeakers of local mosques.

Ismet Yilmaz, Turkey's defense minister, indicated that military force would be used in response to any incursions by Syrian aircraft. Last month, Turkish artillery fired on targets in Syria after Syrian shells landed inside Turkey and killed several civilians.

"The necessary response will be given to Syrian planes and helicopters that violate our border," Yilmaz said.

A Turkish official in Ceylanpinar said the sound of shelling was heard through the night. Two rocket-propelled grenades hit houses on the Turkish side, but there were no injuries, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is barred by rules from being quoted by name.

The official later said a dozen wounded Syrians had been brought across the border, and one died during treatment. The official cited contacts in Ras al-Ayn as saying Syrian forces had entered the town.

A convoy of seven white jeeps and a truck was seen near the Syrian town, but it was unclear who was in the vehicles. On the Turkish side of the border, Turkish jets were heard overhead.

At one point, sounds of jubilation were heard from Ras al-Ayn. One rebel shouted in Arabic: "The Syrian army fled. Did you see?"

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said warplanes carried out six airstrikes in al-Hasaka, including those at Ras al-Ayn.

Regime fighter jets also targeted the rebellious suburbs of Damascus on Wednesday, the Britain-based Observatory said. Heavy clashes between rebel units and Assad's troops were ongoing in the northern city of Aleppo, the Observatory said. The group relies on reports from activists on the ground.

Although the conflict has been grinding on for nearly 20 months, neither side has managed to strike a blow that could tip the balance.

Over the weekend, Syria's splintered rebel factions agreed to a U.S.-backed plan to unite under a new umbrella group that seeks a common voice and strategy against Assad's regime.

President Barack Obama said he's encouraged the opposition has formed a new, more representative leadership council, but the U.S. isn't ready to recognize the group as a "government in exile" or to arm it.

"We consider them a legitimate representative of the aspirations of the Syrian people," Obama said at a news conference at the White House.

France was the first Western country to formally recognize the newly formed opposition coalition as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Obama said the U.S. wanted to make sure the group "is committed to a democratic Syria, an inclusive Syria, a moderate Syria." He also said the U.S. isn't considering sending weapons to the opposition because of concerns the arms might fall into the hands of extremists.

"We have seen extremist elements insinuate themselves into the opposition and one of the things that we have to be on guard about, particularly when we start talking about arming opposition figures, is that we are not indirectly putting arms in the hands of folks that would do Americans harms, or do Israeli harm or otherwise engage in actions that are detrimental to our national security," he said.

The outgunned rebel fighters want arms ? including critical anti-aircraft batteries ? from main regional backers such as the wealthy Gulf states and Turkey.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi brushed off the new opposition group as a "desperate attempt" to undermine Syrians' morale.

Foreign ministers from the main Gulf Arab bloc ? which includes key rebel backers Saudi Arabia and Qatar ? met Wednesday in the Saudi capital Riyadh to discuss the crisis, according to the official Saudi News Agency. The talks were expected to bring in visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, whose nation is an important ally of Syria.

MMA Crossfire Conversations ? Astanga Yoga master Danny ...

Danny Paradise is one of Astanga Yoga?s leading practitioners. A true-blue Canadian from Toronto, he explores and teaches Yoga around the world. He is generally credited with introducing Yoga to many celebrities such as Sting, Madonna and Paul Simon.

Invited by Hotel Yoga and Fitness, Paradise participated in a seminar this past weekend, and has others scheduled for schools in Cambridge and Ajax. He spoke recently to MMA Crossfire?s Kenai Andrews.

Welcome back to The Crossfire.

MMA Crossfire ? The hard-hitting blog that features expert commentary.MMA Crossfire:? What?s your take on the resurgence of yoga?

ASTANGA YOGA MASTER DANNY PARADISE STEPS INTO THE CROSSFIRE

MMA Crossfire: Talk about the resurgence of Yoga.

Danny Paradise:? Well these are ancient practices that are designed to show people how to age with energy, vitality. How to empower themselves, how to heal. Some of the most powerful tools are healing and developing vitality. Yoga?s really an exploration of the soul. It?s soulwork. You come into it as a physical exercise, perhaps. Most people enter into it as a physical exploration but it has very powerful implications for the spirit and the soul. So I?m not surprised there is a surge of interest. It?s designed for the human race. It?s kind of taken world by storm in the last twenty years or so but that?s because it?s so effective and transforming when it?s taught properly.

MMA Crossfire: I understand you?ve introduced Yoga to celebrities such as Sting and Madonna. Were they receptive early on?

Danny Paradise:? Yes, absolutely. Especially when they did it for the very first class. I think it?s clear for anybody if you?re taught carefully in and competently with some experience then people get turned on to it very quickly because the effects are immediate. You notice it instantly. That?s what happened to me when I learned and I think it was the same for them. They were in good shape and doing other activities to stay in shape, but yoga kind of reaches into your body in ways that other disciplines or sports don?t touch. It has very fast effective results. It?s instant like I said. So they noticed it right away, and they realized right away where their weak and strong points were. It becomes pretty clear that it?s a technique designed where your weak points are and how to strengthen them and balance the body. So that was clear to them and most people I?ve encountered wanted to do it every day and the effects are very dramatic when you start to do it on a regular basis. That?s why they?ve kept it up.

MMA Crossfire: ?Have you introduced it to any MMA athletes or boxers?

Danny Paradise: I can?t say exactly if they were doing MMA, but certainly to a lot of people who were doing Kung-Fu, Karate and Tai Chi.I also studied Karate in Canada many years ago and Kung-Fu in Taiwan and Tai Chi. I?m familiar with Martial Arts. I think Yoga is very complimentary to martial arts. In fact, there?s a link between Yoga and certainly Tai Chi and Kung-Fu. Many thousands of years ago the Yogis visited the Shaolin temples in China and there are pictures and paintings of some of the Yogis in the temples. So they were exchanging ideas. Once I started doing Yoga, I recognized the exercises and warm-ups for martial arts came from yoga. So there?s a definite correlation and they?re complimentary disciplines. They fit together very well.

In fact a friend of mine just produced a film about Martial Arts I was in. It?s coming out shortly?

MMA Crossfire: ?What?s it called?

Danny Paradise: It?s called Spirit 2 Power. The director is Khan. She just finished the film and it?s going to be playing at film festivals. She also recognized the link between Yoga and Martial Arts. Martial Arts you could say is an externalization of energy and Yoga is an internalization, although they both kind of cross over. But Yoga?s a real internalization of energy and focus on healing. But Martial Arts is too.

MMA Crossfire: What is the most enjoyable aspect for you?

Danny Paradise: Well, I love to travel especially coming into communities and introducing Yoga or coming into places that are already practicing. It?s a great honour for me and I consider it a privilege to come in and meet different cultures, exchange information and ideas. It?s fantastic and one of the nicest things that I get to do. I?ve been on the road for the last 34 years, so I just got back from Russia and Europe.? It was my first trip to Russia. And of course, Yoga is everywhere now. When I started teaching in 1979 and the early 80s, I was coming to a lot of places where there was a little bit of Yoga, but it wasn?t popular and people didn?t really know about it. And they certainly didn?t know about the more concentrated forms like Astanga Yoga. So, it?s been an amazing opportunity for me to introduce these forms in a lot countries many ears ago and see it kind of blossom over decades.

MMA Crossfire: What is the difference between your brand of Yoga and the conventional Yoga we see everywhere?

Danny Paradise: Well, I originally studied Astanga Yoga, which is considered the most concentrated aspect of the physical practices of Yoga. You could say that? When I was first teaching, Yoga was a much lighter exploration. People would so simple poses and then they?d rest between and do another pose and then take a rest. But with the introduction with Astanga Yoga, a lot of young people got the idea that this was a very deep healing form that helped people raise heat and develop deep levels of flexibility, strength, and balance. After a number of years of Astanga Yoga being introduced in the West, different teachers added their own ideas to the practices and created complimentary practices that spread all over the world based on an evolutionary idea. Just people adding their own ideas. A lot of the forms being taught now, like things that are called Power Yoga, Flow Yoga, many other forms? all are rooted in Astanga Yoga. All those teachers that created those different forms and most of the forms that have become popular around the world today are rooted in explorations of Astanga Yoga, that opened the door to much deeper aspects of strengthening and healing. It all comes from a revolutionary teacher from the last century in India by the name of [Sri Tirumalai] Krishnamacharya He taught several teachers, including Iyengar and K. Patabbhi Jois. Then, he taught his own son [Sivananda]Desikar. Those three teachers have spread the forms of Krishnamacharya, including Astanga Yoga. It was through those three Indian teachers that really have allowed the teachings to spread all over the world. It was basically through two Westerners that came to study with K. Patabbhi Jois in the early 1970s: David Williams and Nancy Gilgoff. They were the first Westerners that really became adept at the forms of Astanga Yoga and then brought them back to the West in the early 70s, from 1973. So, that was the doorway. That led to this surge of interest in Yoga the last 40 years.

MMA Crossfire: It?s kind of funny. It kind of corresponds with hip-hop?s rise. I guess a lot of things gave birth in the 1970s.

Danny Paradise: Yeah. Well, like Yoga, hip-hop is about revolution, thinking and consciousness. It comes from exploration from music, which also drives consciousness, so it?s not surprising. If you look at hip-hop dance, there are a lot of moves from Yoga (laughs). So Russell Simmons, he practices Yoga and he was responsible for some of the first interest in rap. So I?m sure he had an influence on even some of the moves they do in the dance.

MMA Crossfire: That?s an interesting correlation?

Danny Paradise: Deep, deep into Yoga.

MMA Crossfire: ?I remember the video game Street Fighter had a Yoga character named Dhalism?

Danny Paradise: What was his name?

MMA Crossfire: Dhalism. He had a Yoga background and was a very popular character in the game.

dhalsim sf2ce MMA Crossfire Conversations Astanga Yoga master Danny Paradise

Danny Paradise: ?(Laughs). That?s interesting. Well, you know, Yoga?s cross-cultural. People in music, professional services, teachers lawyers, doctors, taxi drivers, hippies. Everybody?s exploring it because it reaches deep into the human psyche, as it?s supposed to. People who have a little energy and want to maintain their vitality recognize very quickly how valuable it is on whatever level. It doesn?t have to be Astanga Yoga; it can be lighter exploration.

MMA Crossfire: ?What about the financial aspect of Yoga? I?m thinking of the clothing company LuLulemon.

Danny Paradise: I think it?s all good. It drives Yoga and helps increases people?s interest. Even though it may be an odd combination because Yoga?s really about anti-materialism, bit people recognize through the practice of course, that they need very little to maintain their health and be happy. But at the same time, if fashion draws people into Yoga and helps feel comfortable in what they?re doing and exploring and makes it even more part of the popular culture, I think it?s great.

MMA Crossfire: You were in town this past weekend for a seminar.

Danny Paradise: ?I always teach a little bit when I?m here in the area. I was invited this time by Hotel Yoga and Fitness. I taught at the Shangri-La Hotel this past weekend. I?m doing some classes locally at Fireflo Yoga in Toronto this Sunday and them in Cambridge and Ajax at different schools. They are all listed on my website.

MMA Crossfire: Did you like filming Spirit 2 Power?

Danny Paradise: Yeah. I?m friends with the girl who created the movie and it was fun. She?s a great filmmaker; she just won an award for a film she made earlier. Herpurpose is sincere to really turn people on to the depth and expression of Martial Arts and Yoga. She?s was fun to work with, her and the camera crew.

MMA Crossfire: So you would work with her again.

Danny Paradise: Sure, depending on what it is.

MMA Crossfire: ?I think you?ve made the case for Yoga today Danny. What would you say to those are curious or perhaps looking at it for the first time?

Danny Paradise: There?s some great schools in Toronto and all across Canada. I think there?s people who are dedicated to passing on these practices. If they are interested, then they can check out a school. Maybe watch some classes, make sure the teacher is attentive and not aggressive. And experienced, I think you can observe that whether you?re experienced or not. Also, try introductory classes at schools; there?s a famous school, one of the first, called Downward Dog. I?m friends with the people that created that school. I?ve known them for 17 years and they?ve dedicated their lives to passing on the practices carefully and competently. They?ve trained teachers who teach all across the country. That?s a great place to start. There?s many Yoga schools in Toronto that are rooted from their place. There?s lots of opportunities for people to learn and explore. I think it?s just to go in with an open mind and see what it is. Once you try it, it becomes apparent instantly what kind of exploration it is. These practices are probably tens of thousands of years old, much older than people realize. They come from the genius of the human mind. Exploring the scared nature of life and recognizing the mind, body and spirit are sacred gifts. The purpose is very powerful; the purpose for learning this techniques?

MMA Crossfire: Are you familiar with Trish Stratus? She runs a big Yoga studio up in Vaughan.

Danny Paradise: I haven?t met her I don?t think?

MMA Crossfire: She?s a former professional wrestler?

Danny Paradise: Oh yeah, I have actually? I?ve seen some articles about her and some pictures. Yeah, she looks incredible, in amazing shape.

MMA Crossfire: ?Right. She was injured when she was wrestling and Yoga helped her recover. So much so, that when she retired she opened up her own studio?

Danny Paradise: Yeah, makes sense. You?re taking complete responsibility for yourself when you practice these forms. You become the authority. It?s not about following authority or gurus or anything like that. These are techniques that create personal authority and responsibility. You learn techniques that you can do on your own. I?ve so many people heal themselves; dancers and athletes. Baseball in Canada I think is working on Yoga. I taught John McEnroe and it helped him heal from back injuries he sustained from playing tennis. So people learn how to heal themselves through ancient ideas that have been passed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. They?re valuable and it frees people from doctors. Modern medicine has its place, but learning how to heal yourself is really what Yoga?s about. You don?t need to run to a doctor for most things. You can use holistic healing and Yoga through your own effort to heal many things. I think a lot of people discover the most powerful healing tool for back injuries is Yoga.

MMA Crossfire: I think I feel better already Danny.

Danny Paradise: (Laughs). Well, drop by my class if you want, you can come as my guest.

MMA Crossfire: That would be great! And thanks for talking to us today. Is there anything else you want to talk about before we go?

Danny Paradise: Yoga is part of Shamanism. Shamanism and Yoga are linked together. Ancient explorations of evolutionary consciousness. You could say Yoga recognizes that the guiding principal is nature. Yoga comes from nature and all Shamanic explorations comes from meditation and communication with nature. That?s what I?d like to add.

MMA Crossfire: And perhaps we can do this again sometime.

Danny Paradise: ?That would be great.

MMA Crossfire: ?Thanks again Danny.

Danny Paradise: Oh, it?s a pleasure Kenai.

Christchurch golf history

Golf has been played in Christchurch since the the early 1900s. According to the NZ Golf Association?s timeline, the sport grew quickly in the South Island ahead of the first New Zealand Open in 1907. Christchurch Golf Club, in Shirley, had an Easter Tournament in 1908. As the attire in this photograph shows, golfing was a formal affair. See also a photo of the first match at the Rawhiti Domain in 1952.
