A big name who really could excite Bears fans became a player in the search for Lovie Smith's replacement Friday.
But Jimmy Johnson isn't going to be the next coach of the Bears. Instead, he indicated he might have some inside information on who will be.
"Looks like 2 of my guys getting NFL jobs . . . Chud Cleveland and my QB coach at U Trestman to Chicago," Johnson tweeted.
"Chud" is Rob Chudzinski, who was named the Browns coach Friday. Trestman is Marc Trestman, the Montreal Alouettes coach who interviewed with Bears general manager Phil Emery for eight hours earlier this week.
The only problem with what Johnson tweeted is the Bears seemingly aren't close to naming a head coach. In fact, Emery still has initial interviews scheduled.
Saturday, he's set to meet with Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell in Atlanta. Sunday, he's supposed to interview Colts offensive coordinator and NFL coach of the year candidate Bruce Arians.
He was scheduled to talk with Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison on Friday.
After Emery completes his first round of interviews, he's expected to schedule a second round for the finalists.
Trestman said Johnson's statement wasn't accurate.
"I have not heard from the Bears and have responded in that manner on multiple levels," Trestman wrote in an email to the Montreal Gazette.
A Bears spokesman denied comment, saying the team would maintain the policy it adopted when the coaching search process began.
Trestman worked with Johnson at the University of Miami. He won back to back Grey Cup championships for the Alouettes in 2009 and 2010.
He was a longtime NFL assistant/offensive coordinator who has worked for the Vikings, Bucs, Browns, 49ers, Lions, Cardinals, Raiders and Dolphins.
Trestman also worked with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler to help prepare him for the 2006 draft. He hasn't been in the NFL since 2004.
